In this episode of Stockyard Sessions, we sit down with Dr Allen Williams

In this episode of Stockyard Sessions, Dr. Allen Williams shares practical insights into land health, drought preparation and livestock performance. Learn how soil observation, grazing frequency and simple management shifts can improve productivity while building a more resilient grazing system.

In conversation with Victoria Lawrance, Dr. Allen Williams outlines the key indicators that reveal whether your land is functioning well. Diversity in pastures, soil aggregation, darker soil colour and improved water infiltration are not cosmetic changes. They are signals that biological processes are working in your favour.

Allen emphasises the importance of preparing for drought before it arrives. Retaining residual groundcover, allowing adequate rest and adjusting stocking pressure early can make the difference between maintaining performance and reacting under pressure.

Livestock performance provides immediate feedback. Body condition, gut fill, manure consistency and animal contentment all serve as practical KPIs that reflect the state of the land beneath them. When the land is functioning, livestock performance follows.

You'll also hear a compelling case study of a ranch that, during severe drought, outperformed all of their neighbours, even taking on extra stock to support those that needed it.

With Wilmot Field Day fast approaching in March, this episode offers a timely introduction to the thinking and practical experience Allen will bring to the event.
